Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU)

A CDU bridges IT liquid cooling loops and facility water systems, controlling temperature, pressure, flow, and heat exchange for safe rack operation. It is the central control point for cold plate, rear-door, and hybrid liquid cooling deployments in high-density data centers and phased AI infrastructure upgrades.

Overview

A coolant distribution unit separates the technology cooling system from the building chilled-water or warm-water loop while delivering controlled coolant to racks, manifolds, and liquid-cooled servers. The CDU manages heat exchange, pumping, filtration, pressure regulation, fluid quality, and alarms so operators can scale liquid cooling without exposing sensitive IT equipment directly to facility water. For Southeast Asia and Middle East projects, CDUs help manage variable ambient conditions, water quality differences, and phased adoption of liquid cooling across mixed rack environments. Units can be deployed in-row, in-rack, or at room level, depending on capacity and redundancy requirements. A well-designed CDU supports maintenance isolation, leak detection, remote monitoring, and integration with DCIM or building management systems, making it essential for enterprise-grade liquid cooling operations. It also gives procurement teams a clear boundary between IT equipment warranties, mechanical contractors, and facility-side water treatment responsibilities.
